POLYTHANE

Polythane used to insulate a floor

USE

Can be used to insulate any floor type.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Polythane Bi - 3 is a 100% CFC - Free insulation board with a hard polyurethane foam core, faced on both sides with an aluminium foil, designed for the insulation of flat roofs, under floor and general insulation applications.

PART 1 - INTRODUCTION

Polythane is a PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulation board intended for use beneath ground bearing concrete slabs. Polythane consists of a core of PIR foam bonded on both faces to composite metallised facings; the gas filled cells give Polythane its high thermal performance and strength.

Insulating beneath the floor slab brings the mass of the concrete within the insulation envelope, giving the building a steady thermal response. The design minimizes thermal bridging and offers a straightforward construction sequence. Polythane is ideal for insulating floors beneath the slab: its high compressive strength enables it to withstand the dead and imposed loads transferred through the slab for domestic and light commercial applications, and it has a very low rate of moisture absorption. The low thermal conductivity of Polythane minimizes the thickness required for the floor to meet the heat loss standards of building regulations.

PART 2 - TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

2.1 Design Notes

  • the DPM can act as a Radon barrier if an appropriate material is specified and the membrane extended across the wall cavity to the outer leaf.
  • set Polythane boards on edge around the floor perimeter and extend cavity wall insulation at least 150mm below the top of the slab to reduce thermal bridging at the wall/floor junction.
  • a VCL/slipsheet may be laid above the insulation to protect it from the concrete and to prevent condensation forming at interface of the slab and insulation.
